Unions

A union, or labor union, is an organization formed by workers in various sectors who come together to collectively bargain with their employers over wages, benefits, and working conditions. Unions aim to ensure fair treatment and equitable labor practices in the workplace.

How is a union created?

Creating a union involves several steps:

  1. Organizing

Workers interested in forming a union gather support from their colleagues.

  1. Campaigning

Union supporters and organizers explain the benefits of unionizing to other workers and encourage them to join.

  1. Signing authorization cards

Workers sign cards stating their wish to be represented by a union.

  1. Holding an election

If enough support is gathered, an election is held under the supervision of an appropriate labor board to officially recognize the union.

  1. Certification

Once the union wins the election, it is certified as the official bargaining representative for the workers.

The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) of 1935 plays a key role in protecting workers’ rights during the unionization process. The NLRA guarantees workers the right to form and join unions, engage in collective bargaining, and take collective action, including strikes. It also protects workers from unfair labor practices by employers, such as discrimination for union activity or refusing to negotiate in good faith.

What is the role of unions in the workplace?

Unions play a crucial role in:

  • Negotiation: Negotiating collective bargaining agreements that set wages, benefits, and working conditions.
  • Representation: Representing members in disputes with management or disciplinary actions.
  • Protection: Protecting workers from unfair labor practices.
  • Advocacy: Advocating for better labor laws and policies at both the local and national levels.
