I’m a Recruitment Pro: This Is the Worst Day to Apply for a Job, and When to Hit Send Instead

There are numerous reasons you might be considering a career change, whether it’s escaping a micro-managing boss or seeking better work-life balance.

Work culture has evolved considerably since the pandemic, with many employees, especially Gen Z, now seeking more from their employers, such as hybrid working options and improved accommodations.

But here’s something you might not have considered: the day of the week you choose to apply for a job can actually influence your chances of landing that interview.

Surprisingly, Monday morning isn’t the prime time to submit your application, nor is it a good idea to leave it until the end of the week, just before clocking off on a Friday.

According to Adrien Kallel, a recruitment expert at Remote People, an international recruitment agency, the most advantageous day to apply is Tuesday.

“The day your application lands on your potential employer’s desk can significantly impact your chances of securing an interview,” says Kallel.

Tuesdays give you an edge because the hiring team is likely to be more focused and less overwhelmed than at the start of the week, when Mondays are often chaotic.

While the day matters, timing within the day is just as important.

“Most people work between 8 am and 6 pm, with the classic 9-5 shift,” Kallel notes.

Submitting your application at around 8:45 am gives you a spot at the top of the to-do list without being too early or too late. It’s all about catching the attention of hiring managers before the flood of emails rolls in.

It’s also crucial to avoid weekends when it comes to hitting send. As tempting as it may be to send your CV off when you have time to focus over the weekend, doing so could send the wrong message to potential employers.

“Sending an application on a Saturday or Sunday morning doesn’t reflect healthy work-life boundaries, and it could raise concerns for your new employer,” Kallel advises.

“Instead, save your draft and set a reminder to submit it first thing Tuesday morning.”

Once you’ve sent in your application, don’t just sit back and wait. Timing matters even after you’ve applied. If you get a response, don’t delay.

The golden rule is to respond by the end of the day, even if it’s just to acknowledge receipt and assure them you’ll follow up soon. This shows you’re prompt, polite, and keen to progress.
