Introduction & Market Context

Looking to fill top-level roles in Malaysia?

Executive search services focus specifically on the competitive industry of recruiting leaders, rather than regular employees. This normally includes senior managers, VPs, C-suite officers, and even board members – the people with the knowledge and professional experience to make critical decisions for their organizations.

Malaysia is currently experiencing solid economic growth, and jobs continue to open up, especially in key industries like e-commerce and ICT, healthcare and biotech, and high-value manufacturing. Unemployment has been consistently low at 3.2% for three years running. These factors contribute to a highly competitive environment in which employers need to compete fiercely and offer attractive compensation packages to fill their top roles.

If you need help finding leaders, Remote People is a discreet, high-level search partner specializing in filling executive roles. Our deep market knowledge helps you find the very best talent in Malaysia to fill the top roles that will drive the success of your organization.

Our Executive Search Process

While regular recruiting can be quite straightforward, executive search services need to be a lot more specific and precisely tailored to each client. Remote People’s multi-stage process helps to define the client’s needs and then actively seeks out the most appropriate candidates for each role. Our data-driven services are precise, and confidentiality is maintained at all times to protect your reputation and corporate strategy. The steps in our process include:

  • Role Profiling & Strategy: We work closely with you to determine the skills you require in a candidate, clearly define the roles you’re hiring for and the culture of your organization, and set criteria to measure success in hiring.
  • Market Mapping & Outreach: Unlike regular recruitment, which generally targets only active job seekers, we set out to contact passive candidates as well to help you find the best people, no matter where they are. This includes research into competitors and leveraging our extensive industry networks and talent pools.
  • Assessment & Shortlisting: We interview candidates on your behalf, while also assessing their competency and performing psychometric tests to measure their mental capabilities and behavior styles. We also perform reference checks and other background checks as necessary.
  • Client Interviews & Selection: Once we’ve shortlisted candidates, we present them to your organization. We facilitate meetings with your stakeholders to help you evaluate the candidates and choose the most appropriate person or persons for your open roles.
  • Offer & Onboarding: While many other recruiters finish the job by presenting candidates, we help you complete the recruitment and hiring process. We aid you in negotiating terms, securing candidate commitments, and smoothly onboarding your new leaders.

Board & C-Suite Appointments

When you need superior leadership for your organization, you shouldn’t settle for anyone but the best-skilled and most highly experienced people. After all, these are the leaders who will either steer it toward success or, if they’re a bad fit or don’t possess the right combination of skills, lead it in the wrong direction. The stakes are high for board and executive placements, and if you don’t snap up the best people, your competitors might instead.

Remote People helps you fill the highest-level roles in your organization, including:

  • C-suite roles like CEO (Chief Executive Officer), CFO (Chief Financial Officer), COO (Chief Operating Officer), CTO (Chief Technical Officer), CPO (Chief Product Officer), and CMO (Chief Marketing Officer)
  • VP roles
  • Non-executive board members

We help you focus on the skills and experience that you want in your leaders, including governance, risk management, digital transformation, and ESG expertise. Malaysia recently introduced its iESG Framework for sustainable development, and manufacturers and other companies will need to adapt to this new commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by the year 2030. As well, Malaysia promotes diversity by requiring companies to have at least 30% women on their boards. These boards also need to have a high level of independence, with between one-third and half of the board of a listed company having to be made up of independent directors, depending on its size. Remote People can help you focus on finding the right people to fulfill these obligations and guide your organization in the right direction.

Healthcare & Biotech

Malaysia’s population is both aging and becoming more health-conscious, presenting opportunities for business along with challenges in finding pioneering leadership.

High-Value Manufacturing & Supply Chain

Malaysia is becoming a leader in integrated circuits, superconductors, and electric vehicles. Businesses need leaders with a strong research and development vision and expertise in getting products to market.

As the country works towards increasing its renewable energy capacity, especially in solar and biomass technologies, Malaysian companies need leaders who can guide them towards both sustainability and profitability.

Timing & Market Considerations

The Malaysian fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends on 31 December, following the calendar year. Bonus cycles typically follow, which means that the best time to launch an executive search is in the latter half of the year. It typically takes around 60-70 days to find the best people to fill senior roles in Malaysia.

Notice periods in Malaysia can be from four to eight weeks, but if you’re in a hurry, you could offer to pay your candidate’s current employer in lieu of notice. If you’re looking at hiring an expatriate executive, you may also need to give them one to two months more to obtain approvals and relocate to Malaysia.

Fee Models & Engagement Options

Our unique payment model for executive searches allows clients to manage their cash flows effectively by avoiding large initial payments for C-suite and board appointments. Instead, we assess a fee of 2% of the executive’s first year’s salary, payable on a monthly schedule. If a candidate chooses to leave within their first three months, we also replace them for free, and you only pay for the new candidate until the end of the initial 12-month period.

Future Outlook for Executive Search in Malaysia

Malaysia’s government is pushing sustainability and ESG goals, while the digital technologies, high-tech manufacturing, and healthcare industries are expected to continue their growth trajectories. New executive roles like Chief AI Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer will soon be needed by nearly all organizations, and planning and hiring for these roles should be a priority to help you stay competitive.
