Introduction & Market Context
Executive search is a specialized branch of recruitment that focuses on identifying and attracting the highest quality talent to fill senior leadership, C-suite, and board roles. It is different from standard recruitment and operates outside of typical public job postings. It relies on a deep, high-quality, confidential network to target both active and passive candidates. The need for this service is clear, as great leaders can shape a company’s vision, culture, and profit and loss (P&L), while poor ones can significantly impact the business.
In China, there is a need for leaders with a combination of international and local market experience. The major sectors are technology, financial services, and advanced manufacturing. The challenges in the Chinese market include the “Great Firewall” and the lack of widespread usage of platforms such as LinkedIn among Chinese professionals, which means that top talent must be approached through a deep and local network search, using local platforms like WeChat.
This is when a professional search partner like Remote People can add value. A partner who understands the Chinese cultural, legal, and business environment, and also works sensitively and confidentially to work through these challenges for you.
Our Executive Search Process
- Role Profiling & Strategy: Successful executive search begins with effective role profiling and strategic alignment. This means collaborating with clients to identify the key skills, experience, leadership qualities, cultural fit, and success factors specific to the Chinese market. It also considers how the role aligns with the company’s goals and the Chinese regulatory requirements.
- Market Mapping & Outreach: Now that the profile is defined, it’s time to find potential candidates. The market mapping team uses its industry connections and competitor intelligence to find active job seekers. They also look for passive candidates who may not be actively looking for a new opportunity. Confidential, direct outreach is key in this step, ensuring targeting the best of the best, not just those who happen to be available.
- Assessment & Shortlisting: The following stage in the process is the assessment of potential candidates. This process includes in-depth interviews, competency assessments, and, where applicable, psychometric testing to evaluate a candidate’s leadership style, vision, and cultural fit. Thorough reference checks are performed to ascertain a candidate’s track record and reputation within the Chinese business community. Finally, a highly qualified shortlist is presented to the client.
- Client Interviews & Selection: Interviews are then arranged between the client and the shortlisted candidates. The professional search partner serves as a strategic advisor during this stage, helping the client make a final decision.
- Offer & Onboarding: After the final selection, our firm works with the client to negotiate compensation, benefits, and other employment terms. We also guide the client through the onboarding process. Confidentiality and discretion are critical at every stage of the process to protect both the interests of the client and the reputation of the candidate.
Board & C-Suite Appointments
Recruiting board members and senior management jobs have the highest stakes, as they set the company’s strategic direction, govern well, and influence the company’s long-term success.
Companies seek leaders with profit and loss (P&L) experience, corporate governance and risk management expertise, and digital transformation capabilities for these positions. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) expertise is also sought to meet international standards and demonstrate social responsibility as Chinese companies align with global trends.
China’s corporate governance regulations pay attention to the diversity and independence of the board. In recent years, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has implemented requirements for independent directors and higher levels of disclosure obligations for publicly listed companies. These requirements require special expertise and experience.
- CEOs dealing with regulatory changes
- CFOs experienced with China’s evolving financial regulations
- COOs managing complex supply chains
- CTOs leading digital transformation initiatives
- CMOs crafting strategies tailored to China’s digital consumer trends
- VP-level executives with cross-functional expertise
- Non-Executive Directors providing global perspectives on local boards

Struggling to find the right executives in China? Remote People helps you identify and secure senior leaders who align with your vision and culture.
International & Expat Executive Placements
Recruiting an expatriate executive in China is a strategic decision that can yield significant advantages. These professionals often possess global experience, digital transformation expertise, and knowledge of other markets, enabling companies to expand, integrate with global operations, or adopt new technologies and practices.
When hiring an expat executive in China, the employer needs to deal with the Chinese visa and work permit regulations. The main route for expat workers is the Z-visa. It is typically issued for 30 days, then they will have to go through the procedure of converting the Z visa into a residence permit. This will involve background checks, a medical certificate, and proof of qualifications. The whole process can take a few weeks to a few months.
For long-term success, cultural integration is important. This includes language lessons, as well as preparing both the executive and the team for smooth collaboration, open communication, and respect for local business customs.
Industries We Serve
Technology & Digital Services
China’s technology industry is rapidly growing. Companies are looking for leaders who have an understanding of AI, big data, e-commerce, and cybersecurity. The biggest challenge is finding leaders who can innovate while also adhering to the very strict intellectual property laws.
Financial Services & Fintech
The financial services sector in China requires leaders who are well-versed in traditional finance and the disruptive impact of fintech. Successful leaders in this industry must possess the skills to manage risk and comply with regulations.
Life Sciences & Healthcare
The ageing population and national emphasis on healthcare improvement are driving rapid growth in this sector. Leaders in this sector need to manage complex research projects, deal with the government healthcare regulations, and create successful partnerships with global institutions.
Manufacturing & Supply Chain
China is the factory of the world, and the government is now focusing on advanced, high-tech manufacturing. Companies are now looking for leaders with experience in automation, global supply chain optimization, and smart factory deployments.
Energy & Infrastructure
China’s green economy shift requires leaders skilled in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and smart grid tech. Balancing rapid growth goals with strict compliance is crucial.
Consumer Goods & Retail
The Chinese consumer market is large and rapidly changing. Businesses in this field need leaders with a focus on digital marketing, e-commerce platforms, and data analytics to understand and respond to consumer behavior.

Timing & Market Considerations
It is always a good idea in China to consider local business cycles and traditions before beginning an executive search. The Spring period, which is the period right after the Chinese New Year holidays in March and April, is often the best time to hire. Many executives have just been paid their annual bonus and are at the time of year most likely to consider a move.
The typical duration for a senior-level search is three to six months, although this timeframe can vary depending on several factors. High notice periods of 30 and even 60 days are common, and extensive relocation (particularly for expats) can take time.
Fee Models & Engagement Options
Retained search is the most common fee model for C-suite and board hires in China. The search partner is paid a retainer upfront and is then paid again at various stages as the search progresses. A retainer arrangement is an all-inclusive, dedicated, and exclusive search for the client.
If there is an immediate opening or a temporary leadership need, an interim executive can be placed to manage a transition or oversee a project. When a role must be kept confidential, then firms can run a discreet search, keeping the company name anonymous until a certain point. Fees are commonly a percentage of first-year compensation, paid in phases.
Future Outlook for Executive Search in China
As China’s technological transformation progresses, the need for executives and leadership teams will likely grow. This growth will particularly be in the fields of advanced manufacturing, new energy, and artificial intelligence. New executive positions like Chief AI Officer, Chief Data Officer, and Chief Sustainability Officer are expected to become more common, as companies adapt to the new priorities of technology, data, and ESG.
AI and machine learning are also likely to be increasingly significant for executive search, to identify and assess candidates more rapidly and precisely.
