Background Checks for Employment in Barbados

Barbados has a modern data protection regime alongside a traditional, in person approach to criminal record checks. The combination means employers need to be organised about consent while allowing realistic time for documents.

What employers can check

Identity, right to work, employment history, and academic qualifications are the standard verifications. References carry weight in a small labour market. Immigration status matters for non-nationals, who need a valid work permit tied to a specific employer and role before they can start.

Criminal record checks

Candidates apply in person to the Royal Barbados Police Force for a Certificate of Character, providing fingerprints as part of the process. The certificate is issued to the individual, who provides it to the employer, and it is only treated as current for a limited period. Applicants who have lived overseas are often asked for an equivalent certificate from that country. These checks are expected in financial services, the international business sector, private security, education, healthcare, and roles involving children.

Data protection

The Data Protection Act is closely modelled on the GDPR and is overseen by the Data Protection Commissioner. That brings familiar obligations: a lawful basis for processing, transparency about purpose, data minimisation, security, and limited retention. Criminal record information is treated as sensitive, so employers need a clear justification tied to the role rather than a blanket policy.

Checks that need care

Credit checks and health information both require specific justification. Health screening should be confined to fitness for the particular job, and general medical enquiries during recruitment are difficult to defend.

Practical guidance

Record why each check applies to each role, obtain written consent, and allow time for the certificate of character. Store results securely and delete unsuccessful candidates’ information once recruitment closes. An employer of record can manage screening and work permits together if you have no Barbadian entity.
