Background Checks for Employment in Jordan

Jordan has a clear and commonly used screening process built around a non-conviction certificate, and a recently introduced data protection law that raises the bar on how results are handled.

Criminal record checks

The document is the non-conviction certificate issued by the Public Security Directorate, obtainable through police stations and the government’s electronic services. The certificate is issued to the individual, who provides it to the employer, and it is accepted as current only for a limited period, so ask for a recent one. Candidates who have lived abroad are usually asked for an equivalent certificate from that country. Screening is expected in banking and finance, private security, education, childcare, healthcare, and roles involving cash or sensitive information.

What employers can check

Identity, employment history, and academic qualifications are the standard verifications. Degrees generally need recognition through the higher education authorities, particularly where they were obtained abroad, and this step is often the slowest part of onboarding. Social security records give a dependable view of formal employment.

Data protection

Jordan’s personal data protection law sets out consent, purpose limitation, transparency, and security obligations along recognisable lines, with a supervisory body and penalties for misuse. Criminal record and health data attract stricter treatment. Take written consent before screening, keep the enquiry proportionate to the role, secure the data, and delete unsuccessful applicants’ information once recruitment ends.

Foreign workers

Non-Jordanians require a work permit, quotas and closed occupations restrict which roles they may hold, and a medical examination forms part of the permit process. Screening and immigration therefore overlap and are best planned together.

Practical guidance

Give candidates a clear document list early, allow time for degree recognition, apply the same requirements consistently, and keep evidence of consent. An employer of record can manage screening, permits, and payroll if you have no Jordanian entity.
