Background Checks for Employment in Seychelles

Seychelles combines a small domestic labour market with an international financial services sector that applies far heavier due diligence. A recently modernised data protection statute sits over both.

Criminal record checks

Candidates apply to the Seychelles Police for a police clearance certificate, providing fingerprints and identification. The certificate is issued to the individual and passed to the employer, and it is accepted as current only for a limited period. Applicants who have lived abroad are usually asked for an equivalent certificate from that country. Screening is expected in financial services, private security, education, healthcare, tourism roles involving guests’ property, and any position handling cash.

Financial services due diligence

Banking, trust, insurance, and corporate services roles attract significantly more scrutiny because of the jurisdiction’s international regulatory commitments. Expect fit and proper assessments, professional reference checks, source of funds questions for senior appointments, and regulator approval for controlled functions.

What employers can check

Identity, right to work, employment history, and academic qualifications are the standard verifications. References carry real weight in a small market. Non-Seychellois workers require a gainful occupation permit tied to a specific employer and role, and the application includes supporting documentation and a medical assessment.

Data protection

The Data Protection Act sets out consent, purpose limitation, accuracy, and security obligations along recognisable lines. Criminal record information is sensitive, so the justification needs to be tied to the specific role rather than applied across the board. Store results securely with restricted access and delete unsuccessful applicants’ information once recruitment ends.

Practical guidance

Allow time for police clearance and for the permit process, apply the same checks to every candidate for a role, and keep written consent on file. An employer of record can manage screening, permits, and payroll if you have no Seychelles entity.
