Who Can Legally Hire in Belize?

Corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and limited liability companies are all legal business structures that may hire employees. To hire employees, a company must register with the government and maintain an active status. Belizean companies are taxed as businesses and have their revenue taxed at the business rate.

Work Requirements for Employees

The minimum age to work is 14. Certain industries and types of work may have age restrictions that either differ from the minimum or limit younger employees under the age of 18. Identification and work authorization documents are required for all employees.

Foreign nationals are required to obtain a work permit before beginning work. For the work permit to be processed, a valid passport, a visa, supporting documentation from the employer, and materials justifying the necessity of a foreign worker are required.

Applicants should have no criminal record, especially if seeking employment within industries such as financial services or the tourism industry. A medical certificate may be required for certain occupations, and jobs in the regulated professions may require a license.

Employment Contracts

Employment contracts in Belize are either fixed-term or indefinite. A fixed-term employment contract contains an end date, after which the employment relationship is set to expire. An indefinite employment contract is unlimited in terms of duration.

Currency is generally Belize dollars (BZD), but some contracts may specify payment in other currencies or a currency-related benefit. The contract should specify payment terms, including the frequency and method of payment, and any other benefits or compensation.

Benefits packages vary but generally include statutory requirements and additional voluntary benefits. Contracts often include a probationary period, usually three to six months, during which either party can terminate the employment with little or no notice.

Working Hours

The normal working week in Belize is 45 hours (nine hours per day), with a full day off (usually Sunday). Working more than nine hours per day or 45 hours per week is considered overtime and should be paid at one and a half times the basic rate.

Normal office hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with a one-hour break for lunch. However, working hours can be longer in tourism, hospitality, agriculture, and other sectors where people may work weekends and longer hours.

Minimum Wage

As of January 2023, the national minimum wage of Belize is BZ$5.00 per hour. It covers all categories of workers in Belize. The Government of Belize has established the national minimum wage as a means of eradicating poverty, reducing inequality, and jump-starting the economy.

Annual Leave

Full-time employees are entitled to two working weeks (10 days) paid annual leave after one year of service. Three working weeks (15 days) of paid annual leave is earned after 5 years of continuous service with the same employer. The employee may take the entire leave in one period or in two separate periods.

Public Holidays

Belize has 13 official public holidays each year. Employees are entitled to these as paid time off. If they are required to work on a public holiday, the employer will usually pay the employee at an increased rate as stated in the employment contract or collective agreement.

Sick Leave

After 60 days of continuous service, employees qualify for paid sick leave. After that, the employee is entitled to take up to 16 working days of paid sick leave per year if the employee provides a medical certificate to the employer. The Social Security Board (SSB) pays a portion of the employee’s payment, and the employer pays the difference.

Maternity Leave

Female employees are eligible for 14 weeks of maternity leave before and after birth. Most of the benefits are received through SSB.
