There are two main visa types for work-related activities in Sri Lanka. It is illegal to perform any work-related activity on the island without first having obtained the correct visa.
Employment Visas (for General Work Purposes)
This is the most common type of work visa, issued to foreign workers who have secured employment with a Sri Lankan business.
Employment visas are granted for a maximum period of one year initially and are renewable subject to continued sponsorship. Each visa is specific to the employer and the role, so a change in job or sponsor will mean that you need to submit a fresh application and obtain re-approval from the relevant authorities. You cannot use the online Electronic Travel Authorization to apply for the employment visa.
Business Visas
The business visa is intended for visiting Sri Lanka to undertake business activities but that are not employed by a Sri Lankan employer. It can be valid for a single trip, or multiple trips. You can apply for this visa type at your local Sri Lankan consulate, or online via the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) .
The kind of business activities this covers are business negotiations and meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, and training programs lasting less than one month.
How to Apply for a Work Visa in Sri Lanka
Before the following can happen, the foreign worker must have a valid offer of employment and/or a valid employment contract from their Sri Lankan Employer.
Sponsorship and Ministerial Endorsement
The employer needs to first apply for authorisation from the Department of Immigration. This is an approval for the entry visa, and the authorisation must be received before the foreign worker can make an application to their local Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission.
The application includes details about the role, the foreign national’s qualifications, and supporting documents such as appointment letters, proof of the organisation’s legal status, and evidence that local recruitment was either not suitable or not possible.
The documents needed for the application are:
- The completed visa application form
- Business registration documents of the employer
- A letter from the Sri Lankan employer in Sri Lanka confirming the terms and conditions of employment
- The visa recommendation letter issued by the relevant line Ministry, government institutions/ agency or Board of Investment (BOI)
- A copy of the data page of the applicant’s passport

Issuance of Entry Visa
Once authorisation is given, the Department of Immigration will notify the foreign worker’s nearest Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission of the entry visa approval. They will then issue a provisional approval which allows the foreign worker to obtain an entry visa endorsed on their passport from the Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission. This is only an entry visa, not the employment visa.
On-Arrival Registration
After entering Sri Lanka on the approved entry visa, the applicant must visit the Immigration Department in Colombo to complete the registration process. There will be an expiry date given at the port of entry, and the registration process must be started before this date.
The Immigration Department will stamp the passport with the actual employment visa, which is normally valid for twelve months.
Processing times can vary widely. Ministerial approval may take two to four weeks, and immigration approval an additional two to three weeks. Applicants are advised not to travel until they have received their entry visa.
Starting the process at least two to three months before the intended start date is recommended to avoid disruption. The employer or sponsor may be asked to respond to queries or submit further evidence during the process.
Costs and Fees for a Sri Lanka Work Visa
Visa fees depend on nationality and the nature of the work. As of the latest information, most work visas incur a fee of RS 20,000.00 per year. There may also be separate charges for application processing or expedited services, depending on the ministry involved and the urgency of the case.
Work Visa Sponsorship
Only registered businesses in Sri Lanka can act as visa sponsors. This includes locally incorporated businesses, international NGOs with an official presence, and educational institutions. The sponsor is responsible for coordinating the visa process and must provide supporting letters, copies of their registration, and evidence of why a foreign hire is necessary. Some sectors may need additional documentation to demonstrate that the role cannot be filled locally.
