Justworks Company Overview
Justworks, an HR service provider based in New York City, started in 2012 as a Professional Employment Organization (PEO). While it works as a payroll provider and PEO in all 50 US states, Justworks has also expanded its services to include international employee and contractor hiring, also known as Employer of Record (EOR) services. This company helps clients take care of employees, streamline operations, and effectively manage their workforces.
With its Employer of Record (EOR) services, Justworks helps its customers hire full-time employees (FTEs) in over 100 countries worldwide. It also lets them manage and pay contractors in over 40 countries. While many competitors make their prices available by request only, Justworks is up-front about its pricing. It provides extensive pricing information about its service packages and add-ons, which makes it easy for potential customers to compare its services to those of other providers. In this review, we’re also going to compare prices and services to see how Justworks is positioned in the competitive HR services industry.
Justworks Key Features
1. Justworks EOR
Justworks has recently expanded into the international hiring space by offering EOR or Employer of Record services in over 100 countries.
As an EOR, it allows clients to legally hire employees in countries where they don’t own registered business entities. Justworks’ network of entities and partners around the world instead act as the legal employers for local staff and hire employees to work directly for the client.
Justworks owns entities and operates as an EOR in 11 countries, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the U.K., and partners with third-party providers in over 90 others.
EOR services cost $599/month for each international employee. With this price, clients can manage international employees through the Justworks online platform.
Able to onboard new hires, manage paid time off (PTO), store documents, provide benefits, run payroll, and pay employees in their local currencies.
They receive ongoing compliance support to ensure that their hiring and employment practices are in line with the legal requirements in each country where their employees work.
In some countries, Justworks is also able to provide visa paperwork and immigration support for employees working in foreign countries.
2. Justworks PEO
In the US, Justworks provides similar services as a PEO or Professional Employment Organization. Like an EOR, it supports employers by managing HR for their employees. However, as a PEO, Justworks is considered a co-employer with its clients rather than the sole legal employer.
- Include time tracking, and attendance synched to an automated multi-state payroll that’s normally processed on the 1st and 16th of each month.
- Manages compliance with various state and federal laws, provides worker’s compensation and unemployment insurance, files payroll taxes, and manages W-2 and 1099 filings for clients.
- Helps with employee management, including applicant tracking, PTO, and both onboarding and offboarding.
PEO services come in two packages – PEO Basic for $59/employee per month and PEO Plus which includes medical, dental, vision, and COBRA benefits for $109/employee per month. Part-time employees working under 30 hours/week cost only $39/month each. Justworks is accredited by the Employer Services Assurance Corporation and the IRS, showing a high level of legal and financial compliance.
3. Justworks Contractor Management
In the US, clients can add contractors to their payroll using Justworks’ regular payroll packages. These 1099 workers can then be managed in accordance with state and federal laws.
However, some businesses can benefit greatly by hiring independent contractors or freelancers in other countries. Clients that already use a Justworks PEO package can add international contractors to their payroll for $39/person per month and only pay this fee in months when contractors are actively working for them. Contractors can be paid in over 40 local currencies or in the currencies of their choice. Justworks provides 24/7 support for international contractor management and helps to ensure that contractors are properly classified according to the laws in which they live.
4. Justworks Recruitment
As is common with HR service providers, Justworks doesn’t offer any direct recruitment services to help clients find workers domestically or internationally. This means that when you use its services, you’ll need to locate and recruit your own employees and contractors. With a PEO package, clients get access to the platform’s built-in Applicant tracking system (ATS) that can help them manage their own recruiting for new staff. Onboarding can be done easily online once new recruits become new hires.
5. Justworks Payroll
Payroll is one of the basic services that Justworks offers either alone or rolled into its PEO packages. If clients simply need payroll support, they can pay a very low fee of $8/person per month on top of a $50/month base fee. This fee gives clients access to automated payroll for all of their FTEs and contractors with multiple pay rates they can set easily. Justworks also pays employer taxes and files the necessary W-2 and 1099 forms for US employees and contractors respectively.
Time tracking integration gives the platform data on which to base its automatic calculations to calculate gross pay, tax withholdings, and benefits contributions for all workers. It doesn’t matter which state they live in because payroll works across borders for no extra cost. Justworks payroll services help clients manage COBRA administration easily and provide other mandatory and optional benefits to their employees.
6. Justworks HR
Aside from recruiting, Justworks’ services cover just about everything else that small and medium businesses need for HR support.
- Onboarding and offboarding can be done efficiently through the platform to help save time while still being thorough.
- There’s room on the platform to store important documents like team members’ contracts and completed forms as well as employee handbooks and company policies.
- You can collect signatures online and track document approval, create and track expenses, graph and chart key workforce data, and set company and holiday calendars all within the platform.
- Clients have access to 24/7 support from technical and HR professionals to help them make sound decisions regarding their staff.
7. Justworks Compliance
Justworks’ platform is SOC1 &2 compliant, and as a PEO, it’s certified by the IRS and the Employer Services Assurance Corporation (ESAC).
When working with employees and contractors in the US, Justworks helps employers strictly follow all state and federal regulations.
When working with international contractors, it works to assess classification to protect clients from penalties.
It also keeps up with the employment and tax regulations in each country where it works so that it can help create compliant contracts and ensure that clients provide all mandatory benefits to their workers.
8. Justworks Platform
Just like the majority of its competitors in the HR services space, Justworks focuses its service provision around a cloud-based online platform.
We’ve already looked at a lot of the functionality of the platform, from onboarding to payroll, benefits administration, and performance management.
- It can work as a full human resources management system (HRMS) for smaller organizations, though it’s limited to those with several hundreds or thousands of employees.
Offers out-of-the-box integrations with eight apps currently, including accounting software like Quickbooks and Xero and HR apps like Greenhouse, Lever, and JazzHR. These integrations, though limited, help with the smooth sharing of invoices and candidate information with some of the tools clients already use.
