Employment Hero, founded in 2014 and based in Sydney, offers cloud-based HR solutions for SMBs.
Employment Hero Company Overview
Employment Hero is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider based in Sydney, Australia, that works primarily with small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). It provides cloud-based tools that help these businesses manage HR functions that include payroll management, onboarding and offboarding, benefits administration, recruitment, performance monitoring, and much more. This provider’s role is to help organizations manage their employees by outsourcing large parts of their HR needs to Employment Hero. It also works as an EOR (Employer of Record), helping organizations legally hire employees around the world.
Founded in 2014, this provider is relatively new but has already grown into a huge business. It provides EOR and HR services to thousands of companies internationally (focusing on Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Australia) and is valued at over $1 billion. Employment Hero’s EOR pricing starts at $399/employee per month and includes payroll, benefits management, and tax reporting and filing.
Employment Hero Key Features
1. Employment Hero EOR
While not its primary business, Employment Hero also offers EOR (Employer of Record) and PEO (Professional Employment Organization) services. As an EOR, it enables organizations to legally hire employees in countries where they don’t own their own registered business entities. These employees’ HR needs are then managed by Employment Hero over the long term. Similarly, this provider works as a PEO to manage HR for employees in countries where its clients own entities but want to outsource their HR functions.
While many competitors in the EOR space offer hiring support in well over 100 countries, it’s not clear how many countries Employment Hero works in. Its website lists only nine countries (Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Netherlands, Canada, and the US) where it offers these services through its own subsidiaries. However, it gives potential clients the opportunity to reach out to its sales team to find more countries where it may be able to partner with a local business to help with hiring. This sounds somewhat haphazard and may not produce the most reliable results, as hiring through third-party partners, especially inexperienced ones, can often lead to communication and compliance issues.
That said, Employment Hero offers its “all-in-one” solution for EOR support across the countries where it operates with its own entities. It provides recruitment, onboarding, contract preparation and management, payroll, benefits administration, and offboarding services for the global employees it helps its clients manage. It also provides tools for time tracking and attendance, coaching, and learning and development. Employees are legally employed by Employment Hero, which means that compliance with local labor and tax laws is the provider’s responsibility.
The price for Employment Hero’s EOR services starts at $399/employee per month. This includes payroll, benefits management, and tax reporting and filing, though it’s not clear whether full recruitment service is also included or not. However, this does include access to an applicant tracking system to help manage job candidates. This may not represent the price for all countries where it provides EOR support and it’s therefore necessary to contact sales for accurate price quotes.
2. Employment Hero Contractor Management
Employment Hero also allows businesses to manage independent contractors through its platform. You’re able to onboard contractors and manage their contracts and invoices just as you can add and manage employees. However, there’s no indication that Employment Hero helps to maintain compliance with international regulations that help you hire contractors in other countries. Unlike other EOR providers, Employment Hero doesn’t seem to help clients assess contractor classifications either, which means that the client is completely responsible for correct classifications.
3. Employment Hero Payroll
Payroll is a main focus of Employment Hero’s services, and its platform offers extensive tools and services for companies of all sizes. The provider offers three different packages for payroll management, including standard ($6/employee per month) and premium ($8/employee per month) packages, which give clients tools to manage their payroll functions. For $27/employee per month, however, Employment Hero’s team will completely manage payroll for you.
Time reporting, holiday and paid time off (PTO) management, and rostering.
Integrates with numerous accounting and payroll applications like Xero and Quickbooks to import data easily and smooth workflows.
Automate tax filing and reporting through the platform to maintain full legal compliance with the local laws that govern your business.
Global payroll services are limited to companies that pay for EOR services. While this is a part of managing international employees, it’s not offered separately to companies that own their own entities worldwide.
4. Employment Hero Compliance
Engage international employees on your behalf with contracts that are fully compliant with local labor laws.
It also manages tax and social security payments to the appropriate authorities to ensure that all tax laws are followed correctly.
It can help you manage employee certifications, build company policies, and manage audit trail reporting.
However, there is no apparent support for checking contractor classification and this can leave clients somewhat exposed.
5. Employment Hero Recruitment
While many EOR providers avoid recruitment altogether, Employment Hero offers a lot of support for recruitment. However, it stops short of actually offering active recruiting services for clients. Instead, it provides extensive recruitment tools that clients can use to help them find the employees they need.
Full applicant tracking system, recruitment email templates, interview scheduling, interview evaluation templates, and even automatic candidate screening.
Post openings to 24 popular job search sites to help you find top candidates.
Access to these recruitment tools varies by add-on HR package, with prices ranging from free to $12/employee per month for premium service.
6. Employment Hero HR
Employment Hero offers HR support both separately and as a part of EOR employee management.
Covers applicant tracking, onboarding and offboarding, compliance, general administration, and reporting.
Helps you to administer benefits for employees and contractors, including health, wellness, and savings benefits, as well as perks. Unlike other platforms, though, it helps you connect with benefits providers but doesn’t provide these itself.
Helps you manage employees with tools for employee engagement, performance monitoring, and learning to the highest value out of your teams.
7. Employment Hero Platform
As with most HR service providers these days, Employment Hero focuses its services around its cloud-based online platform. This platform lets you handle payroll, applicant tracking, onboarding and offboarding, employee management, benefits, employee engagement, and many other HR functions. Users rate this platform as very easy to use and administer. However, several have found it difficult to set up and implement for their businesses.
Employment Hero offers a mobile app for both iOS and Android called Swag. This app allows employees access to the platform to manage their PTO, personal information, benefits, and more while giving contractors somewhat less access. Employees can all use the app to access payroll advances. This app has, however, received mixed reviews, especially from Android users, who have found it less effective than the normal web portal that Employment Hero provides.
The platform offers extensive integrations with several top software packages used by businesses around the world. It has out-of-the-box integrations with over 40 accounting, HR, workforce management, and payroll apps for greatly improved data sharing.
Employment Hero’s platform uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for hosting, which is ISO 27001 and SOC1 and SOC2 certified. The platform itself is ISO27001 certified to provide a high level of data security and privacy for clients.

- Cons
Employee minimums

Limited global services
Employment Hero seems to only offer EOR services for nine countries and doesn’t support global contractor management.
Employment Hero Unique Selling Point
Employment Hero’s USP is its flexible, package-based pricing. Organizations can choose the functions they need and the tiers of service they require, including fully managed service, to take care of HR and payroll.

My Take
Employment Hero is an effective choice of an EOR, HR and payroll service provider, specifically for SMBs based in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore, or Malaysia. It provides a comprehensive employee management platform and some limited opportunities for hiring international employees as well.
