Paid breaks are not guaranteed by CAR law. However, nursing mothers are entitled to one hour per day or rest to nurse their babies for the first 15 months after birth. Employees must receive at least one full day of rest per week. If they work on their rest days, they’re paid 150% of their normal wages.
Leaves
Workers are entitled to 24 working days off per year. After each period of five years of service to their employer, they receive an extra two days a year of annual leave. Expecting mothers are entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave that is paid at the rate of 50% of their normal salary through social security. Fathers receive two days of paternity leave fully paid by their employers.
Social Security Contributions
The social security authority in the CAR is the Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale or CNSS. Employees pay deductions of just 3% of their salaries to social schemes. Employers, on the other hand, pay an additional 19% to provide workers with family allowances, professional risk insurance, and benefits for old age, invalidity, and survivors.
Terminations
Employers may terminate contracts with employees who demonstrate gross misconduct or negligence without notice or compensation. Other reasons for dismissal, however, entitle workers to notice and severance.
Eight days’ notice is provided for hourly workers, one month’s notice for regular employees, two months’ notice for supervisors, and three months’ notice for supervisors.
Severance ranges from half a month’s salary to six months’ salary, depending on the employee’s years of service to the employer.
